Alternatives

It's hard not to be sucked into the claims, "Kills Germs", "Cuts Grease", "leaves your ______ sparkling white"....but your house (and clothes, and body...) can be just as fresh and clean without the chemicals.  It is surprisingly easy, economical, and just as good as harsh chemicals, but safer!  And do we really need to kill every germ!  We are living in the age of super germs!  Bacteria and viruses that have grown immune to our chemicals are attacking us (look at the MRSA epidemic!).  I try to leave some natural, harmless bacteria in my home by not using anti-bacterials to clean.  I clean my entire house with vinegar, baking soda, Dr. Bronners Sal Suds (teatree), and t-shirt rags.  I also use Dr. Bronners soaps as hand soap, shower gel, shaving soap (almond is my favorite), and baby wash.  By using those substances for cleaning and bathing, my family stays healthy, my well and septic system stays unpolluted, and my house provides a healthy environment (btw, if my baby got into the cleaning supplies I wouldn't have to panic- that's a bonus!)

Save energy with no effort

GE Energy Smart lightbulbs:

GE Energy Smart bulbs use 70 to 75 percent less energy than incandescent lightbulbs and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. For example, by using a 26-watt compact fluorescent lightbulb—equivalent to a 100-watt incandescent lightbulb—users can save up to $59 on energy costs over the life of the bulb. Saving energy saves money and is better for the environment.

BITS Ltd. smart power strips:

Even after turning off a computer, power continues to flow to computer peripherals like printers and scanners. This power strip ($32.99) stops the energy from being wasted. For more information visit www.bitsltd.net.

Every little bit helps

1.  Use rechargeable batteries.

2.  Buy lights and nighlights with sensors so  they shut off automatically when it is daytime.

3.  Close vents in unused rooms and close your fireplace damper when it's not in use.

4.  Say no to ATM receipts and write the withdrawal in your checkbook immediately after withdrawing.

5.  Utilize composting to dispose of biodegradable waste.

6.  Use fans instead of air conditioners whenever possible.

7.  Unplug any appliance you aren't using.

8.  Use cloth napkins instead of paper (I suggest a dark color with little ones  ).

9.  Wash laundry in cold water to save energy.

10.  Use canvas shopping bags instead of disposable ones.

11.  Request that companies remove you from their mailing lists to reduce junk mail.
